For three years - until 2016 – the BMBF-sponsored lighthouse project OR.NET drove forward integration in the OR, as well as the integration of medical devices and software solutions within a holistic infrastructure in the operating theatre and hospital. This collaboration of around 50 project partners from industry, research and hospitals, as well as an equal number of associated partners – including steute Meditec – led, amongst other things, to development of today's ISO/ -IEEE standards which define the essential basis for "Service-oriented Device Connectivity" (SDC). These standards are a key prerequisite for interoperability in the OR.
After 2016, the project continued – again with steute Meditec as a partner – as OR.NET e.V. (Reg. Assoc.) The ongoing vision of this association is to apply modern information and communication technology in order to establish safe and dynamic device-to-device communication, and in so doing to realise the openly integrated OR of the future. In this plug & play environment, all manner of OR devices will automatically not only be recognised, but also integrated. The integrated devices can then be operated via a single user interface. Current OR.NET tasks include the set-up of interoperable OR demonstration and test centres.
